With so many Vacuum Manufacturers out there touting some new technology they just came up with in the last 3 months, like Multi-Cyclonic Action??? sometimes it's hard to sort between what is NEW and FABULOUS and what you are really looking for... and WHY you are looking for it. So here's our Guide to help you sort out the why's, and the nots. Included in this Guide, are links to vacuums we carry that we think fit the need of each situation.

And Your First Question SHOULD Be...

Q: What do I need my Vacuum Cleaner to Clean?

Answer #1:
"I have some carpet, some bare floors, and want to vacuum other things, like furniture, window sills and baseboards." - the best vacuum is almost always a...
CANISTER VACUUM CLEANER w/ POWER NOZZLE ATTACHMENT
WHY? … They do everything well. Canisters come complete with a long hose and attachments for doing furniture, draperies, etc. The Power Nozzle (or Power Head) acts like the nozzle on an upright, but is very low profile and will get under most furniture and power nozzles have their own motor powering the brush, so they spin at a more modest speed, and A) they don't chaotically vibrate dust into the air where it avoids your attempts to suck it up ( especially if you're vacuuming too fast), and B) they are better when doing loose rugs & runners since they don't gobble them up like many uprights whose bristles are quite aggressive & whose brush speed is too fast since it's tied to the vac motor. It is also very light in the hand, definitely lighter than any upright, and far easier to maneuver. If you have hardwood or other hard surfaces, owning some type of canister vacuum is a must if you want to properly maintain them since canisters generally include a Bare Floor Brush specifically made for hard surfaces. Even a decent canister vacuum will have great dust control and most if not all are direct suction which allows for better air-flow dynamics.

Answer #2:
"But, I hate canisters - I insist on an upright." - then it's...
OPTION 1:
DIRECT AIR UPRIGHT VACUUM CLEANER and PORTABLE CANISTER VACUUM CLEANER COMBO
WHY? ... Old Style Uprights move much more air through your carpets than uprights with "on-board" attachments, And portable canisters allow more mobility to do difficult cleaning such as upholstery, stairs and cars, without tipping over an upright due to a high anchor point and / or an inadequately short hose. Consider an Upright / Portable Canister Combo for complete cleaning. Together, they are the right tools, for the right job.

OPTION 2:
UPRIGHT WITH ON-BOARD HOSE AND BRUSH SHUT-OFF
WHY? ... These vacuum cleaners, the most common type of vacuum these days, have the convenience of an upright with the handiness of on-board tools. Unfortunately, this combination usually means a hose that is mounted on the side of the nozzle, which lowers it's cleaning ability. So these end up lower on the chart.

Answer #3:
"I only use a vacuum cleaner to clean a couple of rugs / carpets and maybe a quick push or two across some hard floors, I never use attachments."
OLD STYLE UPRIGHT VACUUM CLEANER
WHY? ... Because they move more air than uprights with on-board attachments through the nozzle and have a large center suction inlet, and a giant exhaust port for the air to get out (through the cloth filter bag) instead of a small, rectangular exhaust grill. Even though uprights aren't ideal on bare floors, old-style uprights move enough air that they do the job on them by adjusting the height of the nozzle so the bristles of the brush roll are not touching the floor.

Answer #4:
"I have all hard floors and just a few throw rugs, but I want to do a good job keeping the grit off them and keep the dust to a minimum in myhouse. Also, my floor's manufacturer claims that I will void the warranty if I don't vacuum the floors before "Swiffering" them." - go for the...
STRAIGHT SUCTION CANISTER VACUUM CLEANER
WHY? ... That's what they are MADE FOR! So this is a simple decision. High End straight suction canisters come with amenities such as better dust control, variable speed controls and bare floor tools made for the task. They are the perfect choice.

Miele Alize - $649.99
Miele Olympus - $329.99

Answer #5:
"I have frise, shag and "corn silk" carpets."
STRAIGHT SUCTION CANISTER VACUUM CLEANER
WHY? ... Because vacuum cleaners with spinning brush rolls can damage those types of carpets. Long fiber or natural fiber is easier to stretch and malform than a short tightly packed cut pile carpet. On the longer frises and shags a brush roll can even grab fibers and pull them straight out of the backing of the carpet, so this type of vacuum is the best choice.

Answer #6:
"I need a lightweight vacuum." or "I need a lightweight vacuum but still want to use it on hard floors."
LIGHTWEIGHT VACUUM
WHY? ... Because if you need lightweight, and nothing else matters, you have to get a lightweight vacuum. Lightweight vacuums however, also have a smaller motor and don't have the vacuuming power of full size vacuum cleaners. Lightweight also means, "lightweight", so this could be an upright or a canister vacuum, depending what the term "lightweight" means to you, but take note that lightweight uprights won't have attachments on board - that's how they stay lighter - so if you need them, you'll have to buy a portable canister of some sort.
